Strength Will Rise

We sang "Everlasting God" in church yesterday. I love this song. On a non-deep level, I love the guitar part in the beginning. I love how the drums kick in and the beat is going. But after yesterday, I will never sing this song the same way again.

As I was worshipping, I thought about "strength rising as we wait upon the Lord". My attention immediately went towards a friend I know with cancer. I thought about their struggle and how I desperately want God to heal them...and how I want them to be strengthened as they wait upon His will, His good and perfect and pleasing will. It was also a blunt reminder about how silly our struggles can seem some times. I thought about how important those lyrics are to me right now...but just how much more important they are to my friend.

Lord, may you strengthen those waiting on You today; You are no doubt the defender of the weak and you comfort all in need.

"Everlasting God" by Chris Tomlin

Strength will rise as we wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord
We will wait upon the Lord

Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our Strong Deliverer
You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint
You won't grow weary

Our God, You reign forever
Our hope, our Strong Deliverer
You are the everlasting God
The everlasting God
You do not faint
You won't grow weary

You're the defender of the weak
You comfort those in need
You lift us up on wings like eagles

"...but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint." Isaiah 40:31

La Famille

I pass by this coat rack/shelf/thing-a-ma-jiggy in our foyer everyday. I often observe the neatness of black iron letters. And, of course, it serves as a reminder of the importance of family. The other day as I passed by it I thought: "Hmmm, life isn't really that neat and orderly...not often at least." In fact, if you have kids...and we have a few (understatement)...life rarely feels that in order. So, I decided to put my own artistic touch to it:

That's a little more like it. (ha). And yes, I put it back in order before the wife caught me.

You Need To Laugh

You cannot be mad at somebody who makes you laugh. -- Jay Leno
The most wasted of all days is one without laughter. -- E. E. Cummings
It's really wonderful to be here today in the great state of Chicago.
-- Former Vice President Dan Quayle
Seriousness is the only refuge of the shallow. -- Oscar Wilde

I just spent over an hour watching comedians on youtube. It was a nice break. I'm of the opinion that you need to laugh...every day...and that laughter truly is good medicine.

Nirvana

Ladies and Gents, boys and girls, lend me your ear please:

Tonight I experienced something life altering...perhaps only for a brief time...but life changing none-the-less. It was a Christmas gift I received from my wife and it has turned out to be the best gift ever. (Scratch that, God giving his only Son for all mankind that we may know Him, have life to the fullest, and avoid eternal damnation in complete separation from God...that would be the BEST GIFT EVER.)

Tonight I experienced something that will no doubt (warning, major exaggerations approaching) make me a better husband, father, co-worker, and friend. This something will increase my volume in sales in my job. It will make me pick up after myself around the house...whoa, that may be stretching it.

I'm at peace. I'm relaxed. Right now I could probably be punched in the face and not care. I could even be in a room with a Bama fan for more than 5 minutes (wait, make that 3 and 1/2 minutes). I could drop my cell phone in a bucket of water and laugh. I could hit a deer with my car and then also have transmission trouble with that same car 2 days later and not get stressed. (Oh wait, that really did just happen.)

Enough already, what is it!?!?!!!!!!

1 hour back massage.

My first one ever. The professional kind. (Is there any other?) Cheesy music, dark room...you know, the fru-fru stuff...that I used to make fun of. NO MORE! Dude, I just wish they were not so expensive. Now I feel I need one every week! What a great stress reliever. HIGHLY recommend it to everyone.

Official Deer Hunter

Growing up, I was never much for deer hunting. Fishing? Oh yeah. I liked that. Plenty of movement, multiple castings per minute. But deer hunting?....Putting a non-medicated ADD dude like me in a deer stand and asking me to sit there by myself for hours and have about a 13% chance of seeing a deer and only about a 7% chance of shooting one...no thanks, I'll pass. My 2 brothers and Dad are big hunters, but I just could never catch the fever.

But, tonight, I consider myself officially a deer hunter. Now I must clarify something. My methods are somewhat UN-conventional. In fact, you might say they are illegal. You see, what I do is load up my 98 GMC Suburban, load it down with Christmas gifts, 4 kids, and a gorgeous wife (any points there babe?), and travel down Hwy 72 east towards Scottsboro, AL...just outside Huntsville, AL. And my trick is to get the deer (a dough in this instance...but a big one) to leap out at my car....kamikaze style. In doing so, my vehicle - traveling around 65-70 mph - enters a battle with this ferocious beast. The battle is very quick. Let's say around .4672 of a second. There's really no pain involved (for you PETA folk). It's over before you know it.

And that's how I nabbed my first deer tonight. (Poor thing.) Fortunately everyone is OK (not the deer of course) and my State Farm buddies will get a visit from me tomorrow. The 3 large dents on the right side are quite impressive.

Wonder if putting the deer urine on the front hood made it an unfair advantage?

Merry Christmas Eve

Hope everyone is having merry Christmas. During this time away from work, I'm doing something I need to do more of...read. Right now I'm on ch.5 of Beck's book. Good stuff so far.

I'm estimating about a 7 pound gain during this Christmas break. Mmmmm, red velvet cake...mmmm...coconut cake...mmmm....28 pounds of turkey....

Today's Tid Bits

+ Kinda sad how our society has lost the art of listening. Listening is so vital to your family, your business, your ministry.

+ I just threw out some el junko that was just taking up space in our bedroom closet. I stopped and laughed as I found 4 bats (wiffle ball and kid toy bats). They were in our closet because we had to confiscate them from our 4 kids. Handing a bat to a 6,4,3,or 2 year old and saying "Now don't hit your brother or sister..." is like putting a DQ Heath Bar Blizzard in front of me and saying "Now don't eat it Johnny"; it aint happenin!

+ Looking forward to seeing out-of-town family over the Christmas break. We've already traveled some and will make more rounds this weekend. Family is important, no matter how dysfunctional. :-) (Note: That is a generic statement...applying to a lot of families...not necessarily mine...ha.)

+ Auburn has a new OC. Very very mixed reviews so far. Personally, I'm excited to see a spread offense. I think we will still pound the ball on the ground...this only adds to the arsenal.

+ Now that it's finally cold - I crave the slopes. Is there any better sound in the world than the slush of the snow on your skis...and then SILENCE...because you just took major air on a jump?!?! The answer is no, there is no better sound (or lack of sound).

I like the visitor section

I've attended many sporting events. Mostly Auburn, of course. On multiple occasions I've sat near the visitor section. Usually, at first, I'm not all that excited about my seat. After all, I want to be close to the action - the student section. They stand the whole time. They are the loudest. Most of the energy comes from this section.

But I started thinking more about my past experiences sitting near the visitor section and I've concluded that I enjoy it. Why? Well, I like to see their reaction. I want to know if they are enjoying themselves. (OK, and truth be known....maybe I want to rub it in if we are pounding them. Just kidding, sorta.) But take Auburn for instance. When I sit near the visitor section I can see their reaction to the band marching around the field. I can watch their eyes light up when the eagle hovers over 90,000 people and lands in the middle of the field. I can see how they respond to the pre-game video and the players rushing the field through the tunnel.

Now, obviously, I don't quite expect them to convert. After all, they are there to support THEIR team. Most could care less about our wonderful traditions. To me, though, it's AUsome. It's in my blood. I'm screaming on the inside: "Look at this! It doesn't get any better than this! Incredible! Don't you want to become an Auburn fan as well?!"

Now here's the stretch (where I stretch this - far as it may be - into a spiritual application): I think it's OK to use this as a way of illustrating how we need to be around spiritual visitors - both to our home and our church. When we have a guest in our church, maybe someone we personally invited, it matters, doesn't it? We want to know if they are having a good time. We want to see their reaction to the message being preached and the songs being sung (or sanged or sunged or...just kidding). We want to know if God is reaching them like HE did us! We want them to COME AND SEE what the Lord is doing. Come and experience a great movement. And in our homes - we want them to know of God's sustaining power, that can hold a family together. We want them to experience Christ's love, poured out through us.

So my conclusion is this: If I can like the visitor section of Jordan-Hare Stadium....how much more should I love the visitor section of my home and church and workplace? If I can be excited about silly man made traditions (though AUsome they may be) that support a college and its team....than how much more excited should I be over spiritual, eternal, life changing decisions being made on a daily basis?

Too Close

I'm going to be bold. I'm going to share something personal. My wife and I are too close. In fact, I would venture to say we've been too close since day one - January 15, 2000 - the day we said "I do".

About 2 months ago, we began discussing this problem openly and honestly. We both immediately knew the solution. We both were on the same page on how to solve the problem...after all, minds too close think alike. The problem had been that for the past 8 years, the solution to the problem was unattainable. The means to get the solution seemed improbable.

But with much excitement and anticipation and thankfulness, I report to you, my friends, that me and Dana's problem will be solved tomorrow evening. That's right, in 24 hours our marriage will be strengthened. Ok, that's an understatement. Our marriage is going to be saved!

Tomorrow --------- our King size bed will be delivered. (And we joyfully remove our Queen bed of 8 years.)

Close no more.

:-)

Now That's Stupid

No matter what happens tonight in the College Football Bowl Selection, it will be WRONG. Multiple teams will have legitimate arguments of why they should have a shot at playing for a national championship. I can't believe for this many years there has been an uproar from fans and coaches, etc, and no change has been made. Gosh I hate what money can do to good stuff. Have a stinkin playoff! College football is the only sport without one. LET THEM PROVE WHO'S NUMBER ONE ON THE FIELD!!!!!!! (Can you tell my opinion on the whole thing?) And no, I'm not just a bitter Auburn fan. (We got snubbed in 04, after going undefeated in the SEC...craziness.) Here's the only thing: Do we trust them to establish the playoff system correctly? After all, a popularity contest now decides who plays in the "championship" game. Argh. Craziness.

Let's riot.

Free 411

I often use 1-800-FREE411. Yeah, I know, I hear ya - you gotta listen to the advertisements...but still, it's free! Beats paying 2 bucks for using directory assistance through your cell phone company.

So last night I was trying to find the number for Las Palmas, a Mexican Restaurant in Cartersville. Typically I have to repeat myself several times to the automated system. Sometimes it just kicks me to the operator. Often it's simple words too, like "Target" or "Walmart". So, you know the drill:

City and State Please
Did you say?
Ok, government, business, or personal listing?
Would you like to search by name?
Ok, say the name
Did you say?
Ok, let's try again, just say the name...
Did you say?
Ok, let's try again.....

I'm sure you've been there too. A little frustrating. Well, I say all of that to say this: Last night, I knew going into the phone call that I had maybe a 10% chance of it recognizing me saying Las Palmas. I mean, after all, I apparently can't say Target right. So, being the goofy individual that I am, I decided to say "Las Palmas" with the most exaggerated, over the top, loudest, fakest Hispanic accent I could conjure up. "Laaaaasssss Pahhhhhlmaahhhhssss!!!!" And wouldn't you know it, yep, first time. "Did you say Las Palmas Mexican Restaurant?....The number you requested is..."

Ah, good ole USA.

Maybe I missed some kind of calling: Redneck dude who speakka no Spannich but has killer fake accent. Hmmmm...wonder what I could do with that?

Shhhh....It's Still a Secret

Went to HUNTSVILLE this past weekend. My stomping ground. Hometown. Affectionately called, "Huntsvegas". Little bro got married. Hitched. Doomed....oh wait, sorry. :-)

Had a blast with family and friends. The wedding was on top of MONTE SANO MOUNTAIN. Too many details, not enough time to describe everything. AUsome weekend!

Huntsville/Madison area has grown...alot. Has changed alot. There's a ton to do. You, of course, have the anchor - the Space and Rocket Center. But I won't turn this into a shameless promotion...maybe I already have.

Me and the Fam drove around THIS new development. Very cool shopping area. PIC. Go on the website and check out the movie theatre. GA needs this.

But the whole purpose of this post is to say....Shhhhh - Huntsville is still, for the most part, a secret - A HIDDEN GEM. Please, please don't tell too many people. Please let most people think that North Alabama is like...well, like other areas of Alabama...boring, backwoods...you know, hillbilly - like Tuscaloosa. Please let them think this.

I don't know what most homefolk think, but the growth is cool...as long as it is managed well.

Chinese Gourmet Philosophy

Me and the Fam hung out at Panda Express tonight and enjoyed a little rice (I go with the plain white steamed rice) and chicken and veggies. And, as any person, I fully anticipated the end of the meal when you get to break into the fortune cookie to read something so life changing and challenging and inspiring and important to your future...(sarcastic enough for you?).

But, tonight, I actually enjoyed reading my "fortune". And odd enough, I like what it said and I think it sums up how I often view life/work/education/faith. Here it is:

I hear and I forget.
I see and I remember.
I do and I understand.

Yeah, real profound, huh? Ha. But seriously, I like this summary. In fact, If I could somehow revolutionize our education system, this is where I would begin. Hands on. More time out of the classroom. Application application. Doing. Learning because you are doing.

And when I think about life lessons, and faith in action, and learning on the job, this fits. Things click more at work and you are often more productive when you are shown something and then in turn, apply it over and over and learn it on the spot. Who doesn't prefer that over a 1/2 day conference with chex mix and strong coffee? (Not that there aren't times for training seminars.)

And when do most of the milemarkers in our faith journey occur? Yeah: mission trips and local service projects. Doing. (Once again, it's a balance though, right? Discipleship and personal Bible study and prayer and accountability are vital.) But the "ah-ha" moments - the times that transform us and help us understand our beliefs and solidify our faith - often come when our hands and feet are dirty.

Must See

Ok, so maybe AUburn hasn't had the greatest football season this year. Hit and miss. Highs and lows. But they do have one of the coolest intro videos of any college team.

CHECK IT OUT

Chicken w/Egg Noodle Soup, Cinnamon Toast Crunch (offbrand) Cereal, and Calamari

Random gross post of the week. The above is what I had for dinner last night. Dana was out of the house, getting a well deserved break from the kids, and so I had all 4 kids to myself - feeding them, getting them ready for bed, etc. No, don't worry, the kids had a well balanced meal. Pancakes and milk. ha. But I couldn't decide what I wanted. I started off with a small bowl of soup....but was still hungry. Went to the cereal...that was OK...and then threw in the mushy seafood (squid, are you kidding me?!).

Maybe that's why I felt sick today?

Politics and Putting Others First

Nah...not what you think. Not a rant on politicians or Washington...though it would be easy. Just wanted to share the 2 conversations I've had with my 6 yr old, over the past 2 mornings, as I've taken him to school.

#1: "Daddy....argh...ahhhh...I don't like those!" What Braden, what is it, what's wrong? "Those signs...what are they...they are everywhere and they are bugging me!" Uh (laughing), yeah son, those are people running for office, wanting our vote. (Thinking to myself: Wow, he's learned early - they bug me too.)

#2: It was quiet on the ride to school this morning until Braden suddenly said, "Hey Dad, I put others first at school yesterday." At that very point I was flooded with many different thoughts and emotions - all of them great. You see, on Sunday at the Leaf (our church), the main point in the Kid's area was "I will put others first." I was the host in the Kid's area for the 2nd service, and we talked about different ways you can put other's first. As a leader in kid's ministry, and especially as a PARENT, you want to know - you want feedback and results - that what you are teaching and illustrating is sticking and that they "get it". I asked Braden how he put others first and he told me he allowed other kids to go in front of him in the lunch line. Great job son. I think us adults could apply this Biblical principle a little more in our everyday lives.

You Don't Mind

As I ran to my car this evening - 5:30pm, leaving my office - I had a thought. Actually, a couple of them. I was having to run. And this was a good thing. No, this was a GREAT thing. Why? Well, because I was running to avoid getting wet. Yep, it was actually raining in GA! Seems like it's been months, even years, since we've had rain.

And as I threw my laptop in the back seat, quickly opened my door and ducked my head to get in, another thought hit me. I Don't Mind. I don't mind the rain. In fact, looking out my window most of today, it was like I was watching a carnival or a college football game (ok, not THAT good). But it was a sight to behold. We so desperately need the rain. We are in a drought. A bad one. (Are there good ones?) Historic type stuff. And while I've never liked rainy days, you don't so much mind it when you know just how desperate we are for it. When you know that farmers and business people and concerned people have been praying like never before that God would send rain. I didn't mind the slower drive home. If I was a mind reader...or a reader of road emotions...I would say you could sense a calm on the road. I think there were many other people on the road who didn't mind the rain either.

As I thought about the rain, I compared it to our faith and our witness. When we find ourselves desperate to hear from God, we don't mind (so much) His discipline or odd answers. We find ourselves so consumed to know Him more and to be in His will for our lives that we don't mind whatever He places in front of us - cause we know He loves us like crazy and is shaping us. Also, when we are so filled with the Spirit and burdened for neighbors and friends and co-workers who don't follow Christ, we don't mind the differences. We don't mind being around the cussing or the different values or any kind of awkwardness - b/c it's worth it. We are driven to love them and accept them and convey a love to them that has changed our lives forever. We truly don't mind.

Quick Hits

1. Got my first ever flu shot the other day. Do they have one for the stomach flu? That's the one I want!

2. Overheard two local policeman chatting at the ball field the other day. Very insightful (sarcastic). One said to the other, "You know, we sure is growing...much like Canton and Acworth. The thing is, I've lived here all my life...and well, you know much of these people living here now are not from here." (Wow, thanks Captain Obvious --- said with much respect.) And yes, it was said in a tone of "I don't like the growth, go back where you came from." But no bigee, I can understand his frustration. Personally though, I like it a little bigger. At least we have enough now to attract the Starbucks and Kohl's of the world. Oh wait, is that a good thing?

3. Northstar is showing a promo video for kIDS Beach Club this Sunday during both services. Dana and I will have a table set up near the kids area so when parents come by to pick up their kiddos we can harass them, force them to listen to us, and demand they volunteer......oh wait, sorry, I got that wrong. We can kindly tell them about this great ministry and answer any questions. :-)

4. I recently bought THESE computer speakers. They are at my office and now I crank some serious tunes at work. (They run specials at buy.com...just wait for the free shipping.)

5. Watched Evan Almighty last night. Funny movie. I was pleasantly surprised in the many good points made throughout the movie. A little overkill on the whole protect the environment thing...but overall, great flick.

6. I bought some doggie treats that I give (with permission) to my neighbor's dog. He's in a fence. Good thing too, cause he would attack the living mess out of me or my kids otherwise. Mean thing. I'm hoping this will aid in stopping his ferocious barks at us. So far, though, I don't think it's working. He's probably just thinking, "Sucker...now this idiot feeds me, got him right where I want him."

7. With our oldest,Braden, attending Cartersville Primary School, we are trying to get into the whole town pride/school pride thing. Today was spirit day at his school....but dude, I just can't handle Purple & Gold. Reminds me too much of LSU.

Expect the Unexpected

I've just about concluded that life and faith and love and success and just about everything has to do with the unexpected. However I thought it would be, rarely turns out that way. And most of the time that's a good thing. After all, WHO is in control? Who is steering the ship? Who knows far better what is good for you? Who can see 6 months ahead? And this same Almighty God/Father/Savior/Redeemer calls us to the unexpected, doesn't He?! Look at what He called His people to back in the day. Crazy stuff. Rare stuff. Completely and totally and utterly the UNEXPECTED. Just thinking out loud a little.......

  • I never expected to have four kids within the first 7 years of marriage.

  • Never thought I would have a desire to be involved in a kid's ministry. As in never ever never thought! Now, the potential that kIDS Beach Club has in reaching elementary students is....is...whack crazy! I'm pumped! Cobb County has just about approved everything. 1st Club in GA coming soon.

  • Dana and I never expected to be back at Oak Leaf Church. When I say it came out of left field, I mean the foul line, bleacher seat left field. Out of nowhere. Does it make complete sense to us? Nope. Have others questioned it (body language saying "WHAT?!")? Yep. But are we doing exactly what we feel God prompted us to do? Yep. Are God's ways always common sense? Hardly.

  • Never thought Auburn would beat FL this year. (Had to throw that in there.)

  • Never thought I would be working with 60,70,80, & 90 yr olds. After all, I was on the cookie cutter fast track for Seminary-->Youth Pastor-->Asst. Pastor-->Pastor. That's what you're supposed to do, right? That is how ministry works, right? (Sorry, the sarcasm was a bit heavy there.)

  • Never expected to live in the state of GA. After all, AL, right next door, is far better. :-)

  • Never expected parenting to be this hard.

  • Never expected to be so selfish in marriage. Putting your spouse's needs above yours is difficult (and impossible without God's help).

  • Never expected the things I held in high regard...things I considered SO important just a few short years ago...to mean absolutely nothing now. Is that part of growing up?

      Today's Song

Stop what you are doing, turn up your ratty computer speakers, and sing it out!!!!
      (Hillsong, Take It All)

      Monday, October 08, 2007

Are you kidding me? Dude, totally awesome!

Could you ever imagine something like THIS in Georgia?!?!

Uh....dude...uh, gnarly, eh? Uh,pssstttt...come here...come closer...check THIS out. It's not a pipe dream, no pun intended.

      Further Proof
      A Video
      A Pic

Possible dilemma: My in-laws live just a few miles from the proposed spot. Let me get a feel from them whether or not they want something like this in their backyard. If not, then I'll come back on here and say what a horrible idea this is and how we need to protect the environment and this will kill fish in the lake and.....wait, who am I kidding, no I won't! 30 restaurants?!? World's only indoor snowmobile track? Two ice rinks? Two quarter-pipes, a half-pipe, and a super pipe?!? A mogul field?!? 2,500-seat outdoor amphitheater and replica of a European castle?!?

I've already sent an email to the genius behind this. I quickly put together and proposed a package deal in which I bring in a Christian band and I will be the speaker for youth lock-ins (this is a huge joke if you can't tell) and I will make a ton of money....ha.

Ok, enough with the madness. Quite interesting, eh?

Oh, in case you didn't read the long article - If you wonder why the developer is considering Dawsonville (still relatively small, 1 hour from my driveway), here's why: "It's within 100 miles of 6 million people."

      Umm....hmmm...hey churchplanters...ummm....hmmmmm..........

      Soccer Lesson

I had a revelation of sorts tonight. A good illustration. A lesson learned. It was on the soccer field....with a bunch of 5 yr olds.

Like every parent and every coach and every relative watching and instructing the game, I was barking (nicely I'd like to think) orders to the kiddos. Encouraging them to get aggressive. To stay with it. To get in to position. To kick it in the goal! (I'm an assistant coach and lovin' it---well, sometimes.)

It was about mid way through the 4th quarter that I had this "huh, it is just like that, isn't it?" kind of moment. We were getting clobbered by a much better team and I found myself getting quite frustrated. Yeah, I know, don't say it. I say it plenty to myself. "They're just 5." And you're right. I do everything I can to suppress (over and over and over) my competitiveness, and remember the big picture.

So in that moment, toward the end of the game, I asked myself, "Why are they not listening? Why are they not running? There are plenty of people instructing them where to go and what to do." The answer was simple: They didn't learn it in practice. We didn't really do a good job showing them how to spread out or pass or turn the ball well.

And in that moment I compared that with following Christ. Specifically, passing that following on to our kids. I think the average approach (that I find myself in quite often) is yelling from the sidelines. We are encouraging them to do the right thing. We want them to succeed. We want them to trust this Jesus that we are entrusted to. We want them to discover God's best. But in those gametime moments, when character and faith are tested, what will they have to recall? Will they be able to pull up illustrations from memory? Times when they saw us illustrate a Biblical principle? Did we ever intentionally teach them "in practice"? Here's another one: Did we just leave it up to the church?

And for those thinking it: Yeah, I know, this is oversimplified. I know it's more than, "Oh, just teach your kids right and they will not fail or abandon their faith." We all know the stats on that and what kind of enemy we are up against. But I know for me, next time I wonder why one of kiddos is just not listening or just not making the wise choice, I'm not just going to simply pass it off as them just being a kid or the rebellious spirit. I'm going to look for those teachable moments and first place the responsibility back on me - what have I taught or showed or lived out in front of them that would help change the current situation?

p.s. Back to the competitiveness stuff: Sorry other coach, you can't sub when my goalie is holding the ball. I may have informed him of that tonight. :-)
(In a "bless you brother" kind of way.)
      :-)

      Next Question

Question: I've heard you're cheap. Just how cheap are you?

Answer: So cheap that when buying a $9.99 pair of sunglasses yesterday at the drugstore, I asked for a discount because there was a small scratch on the left lens.

(The scratch was so small you had to squint to see it.)
(It worked. I paid $7.99 for my wonderful new shades.)

      Question of the Day

The interview format did not flow, so now the format will be "Question of the Day"?

Question: Jonathan, with Auburn being 2-2, both losses coming from unranked teams, what are their odds of winning against Florida IN THE SWAMP this weekend?

Answer: I'm having a good morning, can we please keep this positive.

      Interview w/Self : Volume 1, Chapter 1, Section 3b, Row 14, Seat 09

To ease the flow of this interview, my subconscious will be called "Tom".

Tom: Good morning Mr. Sutton, I appreciate you taking time out of your busy schedule for this interview.
Jonathan: No problem, let's get to it.
Tom: Absolutely. This morning's interview will consist of a series of random questions.
      Jonathan: Gee, what surprise.

Tom: Question number 1: As a devout follower of your blog, I've noticed you haven't mentioned any good church signs lately. Why is that?
Jonathan: Well, I'm trying not to "slam" or be negative towards someone or something...especially the body of Christ. We have enough of that already. However, it's funny you mention the church sign thing...cause I just saw one yesterday morning that HAS to be mentioned.
Tom: Ok, but keep it clean, be nice.
Jonathan: Sure thing. The sign said, "Almost living right is still wrong! Right is easy with God's help." I'll keep this brief and simple. This sign does absolutely no good. Here's how I see it: To me, this sign says, "Nice try, but you failed. You 'almost' got it right, but your not up to our standard. God/We demand perfection. You are still wrong! If you 'almost' did the right thing, good try, but you're still damned!" By the way, why do any church signs address the community with messages like this? What possible good could come from a sign like this? When I pass by a sign like that, my first thought goes to the divorced guy who lives 2 houses down from the church. He grew up in the church. Was married in the church. But then things went sour. His life unraveled. His marriage fell apart. And within the blink of an eye, he found himself isolated from his friends at church. He's not sure how it happened. But now he feels he can NEVER go back. Why is that? It's because of the attitude of the "saints" at that church. To them, this guy failed. He didn't "live right". He almost did. He did for awhile. But as we all know, Jesus only died for those who live right. :-0 This oozes and smells of PERFORMANCE PERFORMANCE PERFORMANCE. Where is your focus church? We are not in the business of trying to help/make people "live right". We are in the business of extending the same grace and forgiveness to others that has been poured on to us. Stop telling people they are wrong. You only make our job harder. Please read more carefully how Jesus handled the religious people of His day. The parallel to what we do sometimes...how we treat unbelievers...how we put the external standards of living above WHO we are following...you may find this parallel frightening.

Due to my insanely long response, I'll continue with question 2 and 3 at a later date.

      Don't Stop Running!

"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith."
      2 Timothy 4:7

I heard the phrase, "Don't Stop Running!", twice this weekend. In two different places. For two different reasons. But one is a great illustration for the other.

The first place I heard it was out of my own mouth on Saturday. It was on the soccer field. It was spoken to my 6 yr old and his soccer team. I think it's one of the crucial things you attempt to teach kiddos who are learning the game of soccer. Followthrough. Don't stop running. The tendency is to stop. The tendency is to not keep going when confronted by Billy on the other team. But great things happen when they keep dribbling. When they run back to play defense. When they bust through 4 defenders and shoot in the left corner of the goal, away from the goalie. It seems so easy to us, doesn't it? From the sideline. They are right there. Right in front of the goal. Just turn and shoot! Just don't stop! You are almost there!

The second place I heard it was at church yesterday, when hanging out with the youth. It really wasn't part of the main message, just a phrase the middle school pastor used. But it stuck with me. "Don't stop running to Christ!....He defines who you are...not your failures...keep pursuing Him, keep pursuing holiness...Don't stop running to Christ!"

Following Christ, it could be said, is much like a soccer match. In our journey, in our struggle, in our following...we must keep running. We know there will be setbacks. We know our enemy is out to destroy us. Embarrass us. Stop us in our tracks. But just as in soccer, we have teammates. We have support. We have others to run with. Just don't stop running! Simplistic? Extremely. Important? Unbelievably important! Crucial to our following.

So there's your Monday morning encouragement. No matter where you are, no matter what the score...please remember 1/2 the battle is to just keep pursuing; Don't stop running.

      Howdy

What's up crew? Been awhile, eh? On the brain this Saturday morning:

I was reminiscing the other day about tornadoes. I grew up in "Tornado Valley" (The Tennessee Valley, North Alabama). I was thinking back to the underground shelter that was owned by this crazy old dude down the road from our house. I was remembering how crazy old dude became our best friend on many occasions. :-) I also remember when we got a phone call one Friday night, after a tornado had hit the local middle school and a couple of nearby neighborhoods. We had friends in those neighborhoods. We hopped in the car to go help. I remember being shocked by what I saw. One of the neighborhoods was nice. Big houses. Big brick houses. Strong houses. Didn't matter. What came through there made everything look vulnerable and weak. We huddled together with a family that was lucky to be alive. The dad, JUST prior to the thing hitting his house, grabbed his kids and wife and threw everyone in the hallway closet and became a shield over them. As we walked through what was once a home, we were amazed how that closet was one of the few areas unharmed.

Things are going great with my work, Generation Mortgage. That's a big part of why I haven't blogged in awhile. Very busy.

HERE is a great article on Auburn's Football Program. I hope they can turn things around this year and get a few good upsets.

God may be leading Dana and I back in to churchplanting. (Never thought I would say that this soon.) Will keep everyone posted.

Last Sunday I was a main character in a sketch at Northstar Church, 3rd-5th. Getting back in to drama (specifically with kids) is awesome. I'm right at home. The main phrase last week...that we can all benefit from: "We need to look for ways to tell friends and family about Jesus."

My "little" bro is getting married in November. He's the last of us Sutton boys to get hitched. It'll be a fun time. Outdoor wedding on Monte Sano Mountain. But shhhhh...y'all don't say anything....but Justin has a little surprise coming. What, you think we wouldn't do something really really embarrassing for the last one through?

      Proud of My Home State

The front page of my home state's website (or at least the most popular state site) has THIS story and the above pic headlining today.

I'm just not sure what to say right now. Wow. I'm proud to be from Alabama? Ummmm....hmmm...wow. Iraq? Health care? A kidnapping? Election? Sports? No, those are secondary.

      Wienermobile!
      :-) gotta love it

      Wednesday Happenings

      >Bought the above in downtown C'ville this morning, off the back of a dude's truck. He also had tOmAters 4 sale. For the past 50 years, every Wed and Saturday, the locals will park in downtown Cartersville and sell their garden goods. I've heard this stuff is good. We shall see. I'm testing it on my mother-in-law. She comes in to town today to help with the kiddos while Dana attends a Christian Counseling conference in Nashville. She likes hot salsa (I don't), so this is just a small way to say THANKS for coming and helping us out. My father-in-law John will join in the battle (4 kids) tomorrow morning, broken leg and all.

      >Soccer season is in full swing now. Braden and Logan played their first game Monday evening. They both did great and they absolutely love chasing a ball around the field and drinking blue powerade and eating snacks. While I was coaching Logan's team, Braden had a game going on at the same time. According to Dana, Braden played defense most of the game...until he went up to the coach and said something like, "Hey coach, I'd like to play up there and take the ball down the field and score a goal." The coach finally gave in and switched him to forward. Dana said within 60 seconds he got a breakaway opportunity, took the ball down the field, and scored. Atta boy! (Just like Dad used to do in high school soccer...well....except his kick when in the goal.)

      >Working with seniors can have its frustrations at times, but overall it's a blast and I can't get enough of their stories. If you don't have the patience to sit and listen to their life stories, I feel for you. You're missing out.

      >Prior to the games on Monday night, both Dana and Kinley were stung by a yellowjacket (unrelated to Georgia Tech). Kinley's has gotten better. Dana's arm still looks like a red ripe tomato.

      >kIDS Beach Club is going great. About to launch our first club in Paulding County. Having a good gathering of local ministers next Thursday for a brief info meeting. Fun times.

      >No carbonated beverages for 30 days. I'm on day 3. So far, I don't miss it. I've heard water is good to drink every now and then. :-)

How To Lose A Game, part "duh"

Hmmmmm, how ironic. Looks like I made my "How To Lose A Game" post one week too early. South Florida put it to the Tigers last night. Congrats to em.

Uh...duh...yeah, you're going to lose if you turn the ball over 5 times.

But hey, I'm not a fair weather fan. Time to re-group and do your best in conference play. Let's go.

How to Lose a Football Game

(For those who read my blog...all 5 of you, sorry it's been a slow week...more posts coming soon!) Here is the evidence of the meltdown I told you about from my previous AU post. I told you the quarterback made a bonehead move!

      Wednesday Is Today

+ I could work 90 hours this week and still have stuff to get done. (This is no complaint - I'm in sales! I love being swamped!)

+ Cool thing happened last week at work: A lady had used up all her sick leave recovering from a surgery, so someone in HR sent out a company-wide email asking if anyone wanted to donate a vacation/sick day to her. I think she was in a bind and couldn't really afford any unpaid time off. The response was remarkable! She's probably set for the next couple of months. Some people donated 1/2 of their vacation. That's cool. That's steppin' up. That's unselfish. That's caring. Good stuff.

+ Driving back from being out town this weekend, I couldn't stop thinking about different business ideas. The overwhelming one: I have a ton of good ideas on how to run an extremely profitable, great Truck Leasing Company (Think UHaul, without all the problems.) I have no idea where the thought came from, but it wouldn't leave me alone. Maybe I'll make a few phone calls and try to sell my idea. Or maybe I'll just get back to work and wait til my genius Beanie Baby idea kicks in. (that's a joke in case you missed it.)

+ I've stopped yelling at my neighbor's cats. It used to bug me that they would come over every night and sleep in my driveway. But after realizing that they hunt down and DESTROY rodents (you know, like mice!), they are a welcome visitor.

+ Looking forward to flying out to Dallas this weekend. Texas residents are very proud of their state - like nowhere I've seen before.

+ Have I ever mentioned that having four kids, all under age 6, is a little crazy?

+ If I had time and money right now (and little responsibility): I would take a photography class, an acting class, tour with a drama team, go work for an inner-city ministry for a couple of months, visit California, let Dana get away for 2 straight weeks with nothing but relaxation on the agenda, build an airplane (oh wait, that's weird), go play 8 different disc golf courses over a weekend, and eat a Ruth's Chris steak. If the previous were put in order, I would start with the steak.

      Dear Mr. Freeman

Dear Mr. KSU quarterback, Josh Freeman:

Congrats on a phenomenal game. You came into Jordan Hare Stadium and acted like it was your backyard. You dominated a good defensive team for 3.75 quarters. You had 33 completions for 289 yards. You were poised. You are extremely athletic and quick. Dude, I'm not being sarcastic...there's no doubt you are a great quarterback. I hope you guys do well in the Big 12. (I now see why you guys beat #4 Texas last year.)

But Mr. Freeman, you do realize your MAJOR mistake, right? You do realize that you caused the turning point in the game, right? Now, this is just a humble fan's opinion - a fan who was sitting on the 45 yard line last night, row 8. I had a perfect view of your lost focus. I guess it was around 6 minutes left (just going from memory here...hard to remember, I was depressed most of the game because or your team's dominance) that you decided you'd had enough of our defensive lineman getting the crowd back in the game. They were doing the usual hand/arm motions, asking the faithful fans (especially the student section) to bring the noise and help out. You decided to do the EXACT SAME MOTION, asking the crowd to bring it, as if you were saying, "I'm not scared, bring it...you got nothin'!"

Uh....Josh....I'm no football player, but....uh....you might want to leave the trash talking to linebackers and lineman. Not only did you say bring the noise, but you also mouthed off at our defensive lineman. Dude, here's some free advice: You had the game won. Our offense had sputtered all night. You just needed one more decent drive. You had done it all night. But I guess you just couldn't resist, eh? You lost focus dude.

The moment you did that, not only did it tick our fans off enough to increase the decibel level, but it also lit a fire in our defense that ultimately resulted in your demise (see pics above) - 2 sacks, a fumble, and an interception, all at the end of the game.

A frustrating game, but no doubt one of the best endings I've witnessed in some time.

      She Needs Your Help

      Ok, here's the Friday Challenge:

Guys - Dads in particular - our wives need our help. Let me preface this statement with a few points. First, I'm saying this because I've failed miserably before (numerous times...ok, too many to count) in this area. Consider this more of a journal entry than a blog post. Second, for you "deep" thinkers out there, don't take this too far. I'm not elaborating on the role of woman vs. men. (I can hear some extremist shouting now, "But the woman is the help mate!") Not trying to debate anything like that here.

So, here's the point. And it hit me randomly this morning. My wife needs my help. (Wow, revolutionary, eh?) But seriously, it's SO EASY for us dudes to get so wrapped up in our work (good thing, yes) and our football and our whatever whatever, that we forget to do simple things to help out our wives. I relate this mostly to us with kiddos...especially if you have more than one.

So here's our weekend challenge: Let's do a little extra. Give em a break. 1 day of no diaper changing. Or, like I need to do more of, help get the kids ready for school in the morning. Pick up, clean up. Do more than the trash. Surprise her with a back massage (if you got a little cash, make it a professional one). Wash a load of clothes (wait, that's taking it too far...ha).

For those thinking I'm just writing this to earn some points or to make myself look good.....................I would never do such a thing. Warning: Sarcasm Detected

      Thursday Unload

      • I'm looking forward to watching LSU vs MSU on the teli tonight. Never thought I'd be excited over watching these two play, but hey - it's the first game of the season!
      • Yesterday, while driving to work, John 15:5 came to mind - again and again. The thoughts of "apart from Him - we can do NOTHING". Funny how we commit our lives to this calling, this following of Jesus...and it's impossible to live it without the indwelling of the Holy Spirit; impossible to do on our own merit; we are extremely weak - yet through Him and in Him and by Him, we approach the Father with the utmost confidence, blameless, set apart, Holy, asking for whatever we need. (Yeah, elementary stuff here...but dude, just amazing when you stop and consider it.) So yesterday it was just a great drive time of reflecting on His sustaining strength and a reminder that we must daily yield our wants and desires and most importantly, "stop trying" - realizing that ANY good that will come out of me that day will come from Him.
      • Flying to Dallas next weekend. Meeting with kIDS Beach Club again. Dana and I always come back refreshed after being around this group. When you are around people who have given decades of their life to serving kids and loving kids and have a passion to teach children about God...man, it just fires you up. Refreshment for the soul.

      • Another co-worker of mine switched to Verizon yesterday. Another soul saved. (ha)

      • Dana fell down the stairs recently (sorry babe, had to share). You ought to see the bruise on her arm. Ouch.

      • I'm looking forward to spending time with family on Monday. No work!

      • I'm kinda/sorta/a little/still trying to avoid/pretty much already doing it - coaching Logan's 4yr old soccer team. Kinda got stuck on me. It's a riot. I'm seriously about to go "Patch Adams" on them and start doing some really unconventional practice drills. I mean, cmon, these are 4yr olds. How do you think the parents will react when I have the kids act like their favorite animal while kicking the ball into the net?

      • Spoke with an 85yr old lady from NJ yesterday. She moved to the US when she was 27, from Italy. She talked about her famous pasta and meatballs. I would LOVE to drive up to NJ and partake of her delicious cooking. Imagine how old her recipe is. Yummy.

      • Random question of the day...from my 6yr old..."Daddy, bad guys don't trust God, do they?"

      Lyrics For Today

Song stuck in my head right now:

      Sing to the King

Sing to the King Who is coming to reign
Glory to Jesus, the Lamb that was slain
Life and salvation His empire shall bring
And joy to the nations when Jesus is King

Come, let us sing a song
A song declaring that we belong to Jesus
      He is all we need
Lift up a heart of praise
Sing now with voices raised to Jesus
      Sing to the King

For His returning we watch and we pray
We will be ready the dawn of that day
We'll join in singing with all the redeemed
'Cause Satan is vanquished and my Jesus is King

The 2nd time through the 2nd verse...the way it builds up to the moment - the proclamation of Jesus being King, and Satan being vanquished - dude, cmon now...are we awake?...hello?...if this doesn't move you in some way...especially the way it dramatically builds...and singing it loud amongst others making the same proclamation...wow. Good stuff.

Cool FCA Promo Video (AU of course)

      Day At The Park

So this weekend has been interesting. Dana is out of town. I'm surviving with all 4 by myself. The kids...well, the kids...I think are surviving too. Hey babe, here's proof we survived the park yesterday:

      AL vs GA (the states)

I grew up in North Alabama. Spent the first 18 years of my life there. Same house. The next 4.5 years I spent in Southeast AL, in college. I've now lived in GA for 2.5 years. Plus, my wife is from GA. And I went to college with a bunch of GA kids.

I give you that background to let you know my opinions on the two states are informed ones; experienced ones; opinions you can trust. (Wow, I'm starting to sound like Fox News.) So without further ado, I give you my Top 5 / Top 5.

Top 5 Reasons I like Alabama over Georgia:
      • It's hard to put into words, but it's just a different FEEL. A slower pace. A front porch setting. Not as much "keeping up with the Jones'".
      • Far less TRAFFIC! Yeah, I know, B'ham and Montgomery and Huntsville THINK they have traffic, but they have no idea.
      • Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. Fun place to visit. They keep adding new venues. And hey, what better place to put a bunch of really smart engineers and the history of our space program than SMACK DAB IN THE MIDDLE OF NORTH ALABAMA! Awesome!
      • Home of Auburn University. This fact not only makes Alabama one of the top 10 states in the country, but qualifies it as one of the best sites in the WORLD.
      • College sports rule the state. No pro sports present. That can be a negative at times, but it gives the state of Alabama a unique feel.

Top 5 Reasons I like Georgia over Alabama:

      • You don't have to deal with intolerable Bammer fans. You don't have to hear about their 12 (really only 6) nashinul champeeonchips. You don't see as many dudes in houndstooth hats wearing a torn tanktop and giving more money for his season tickets than he does for 2 years worth of child support. (Ok, maybe I got carried away on that one.)
      • Braves and Thrashers. It is nice to have pro sports close by. It is nice to hop in the car with my 6 yr old and drive 45 minutes to watch the Braves play. That's fun. (Notice I did NOT mention the Falcons.)
      • Sometimes, better business opportunities. Let's face it: there's just ton more business here and tons more companies.
      • More to do, especially if you have kids. GA Aquarium, Coca Cola Museum, Six Flags, etc, etc, etc.
      • GA only gets 4. I've assessed a 1pt penalty on GA for their attitude towards Alabama residents. There's a little too much "we are better than you" attitude here (not even close to being true) and too much nose up in the air. The irony of these comments is there's actually MORE rednecks in Georgia than Alabama. (Don't try and debate me on this. You will lose.)

One thing I left out, because it's a tie, is the hunting/fishing/state park comparison. Both are excellent.

Well, there you have it. The scientific, non bias (yeah right), comparison of these two glorious states. I'd love to write more, but Sweet Home Alabama just came on the radio and I've been trying to record this song on my cassette player for months now. Gotta go!

      Amazed

Right when I thought life could not get any better, I visit a Cold Stone Creamery and find out:

      IT CAN!

(for those new to the internet, you need to click on "IT CAN!"....there you will discover something you never thought could get any better, but it appears Cold Stone has made my wildest dreams come true.)

      On The Brain

      * Just how TALL can my grass get? Wonder if I should try and set a neighborhood record...or maybe I should actually get out there and cut it some time soon.

      * Have been working long hours lately...plus on the go with kid's sports now...we need another vacation and QUICK.

      * Heard a stat on the radio this morning: Atlanta has more 25-34 yr olds than anywhere in the country. And they keep coming in droves. (For those in ministry looking to target singles or that age group---come to hotlanta!)

      * My work provided me with a new Treo. I'm lovin it. I feel "official" now. Ha.

      * It's scary how much a 6 yr old already understands about life and faith and how much they watch your actions.

      * Verizon is the best wireless network, no debate.

      * Bluetooth is overrated.

      * Apple computers are overrated.

      * TV is overrated...I still watch too much of it though.

      * In my f/t sales job, I am fortunate. I work around people who have been in ministry for years. We have a ton in common, the same heart for people, and just downright get along great. I am very fortunate to have this work atmosphere.

      * Do you think playing poker is a sin?

      * I still don't own an Ipod...not yet.

      * Thing I'm looking forward to most in the next 48 hours: purchasing a new pair of dress slacks.

      * The previous comment makes my life a sad and pathetic one. :-)

      * I dearly miss ultimate frisbee.

      * We serve an incredible INCREDIBLE God. We are extremely flawed. He is extremely forgiving and full of mercy. His love endures forever. What a great and trustworthy God!

      In My Head

Some insightful randomness from days ago and days ahead:

+ Took the kids to Chuckie Cheese tonight. We wouldn't normally do that on a school night, but everyone took a super log nap today from a long weekend. I can assure you I enjoy the Chuckster just as much (reality: more) as my kids do. I especially enjoy it more since they dropped all games to 1 token. And here's a freebie for you: They don't advertise it, but you when you go to redeem your tickets, cotton candy is a choice (150 tickets). I learned that tonight and we enjoyed two bags of blue sugar. Much better than a cheap plastic fall-apart-toy.

+ The thing that stood out to me this morning during our membership orientation at Northstar Church was the proof of impact made in the community. A lot of churches TALK about reaching the community, but Northstar has become the FIRST CALL during a crisis, etc. It was neat watching a video of school principles, coaches, and even the city mayor talk about the difference a group of people have made in the community. My favorite line from the mayor: "What has always impressed me is the unconditional giving of the Northstar people. They always give without asking for anything in return...like saying we'll give you something but you need to attend our church."

+ Played disc golf on the campus of Berry College in Rome, GA. Played early early early Saturday morning. Did I mention it was early? We saw hundreds of deer, some within 50 yards. I think Berry has the largest campus in the world, no joke. The disc golf course was nice, if you like deer droppings every 10 feet.

+ Dana starts teaching preschool on Monday.

+ Braden and Logan start soccer practice Monday night. I love soccer. Was by far my favorite sport growing up. (I wish I was in that kind of shape now!)

+ Friday we had a HUMUNGO God thing happen! A former company I worked for owed me some money, but I figured to never see it b/c they had sorta gone under. (I know, "sorta gone under" sounds weird but they "kinda" merged with another company, and now that company shut their doors.) Dana and I had family and friends coming in to town for a birthday party and wanted to splurge a little and make it a nice weekend....but things were tight. This check randomly shows up on Friday, unexpected, and enabled us to do some things we couldn't have otherwise. It should never surprise me, after all, God is in the business of providing for us and caring for us and we shouldn't worry. But it still just blows me away every time.

+ Dana is having a girls get-away this coming weekend, at the lake. I'll have all 4 kids to myself. Pray for the safety of my children! :-)

+ I have a guy get-away the following weekend in AU. (Tailgaiting, ESPN night game, Losing my voice, F-U-N.)

      Friday's Quote

Today's quote comes from my 4 yr old, Logan:

Logan: Mommy, you're my best friend, I love you.
Editor's Note: This is a huge step for us. He's our strong willed child. Sometimes when he's upset he'll say "I'm NOT your best friend"....so this this random act of love is huge for us! :-)
Dana: Ahhh Logan, thank you, I love you too.
Logan: Mommy, I never want you to go away...
Dana: Well Logan, I don't either, I will always love you and always be your mommy...
Logan: Cause mommy, if you go away then we won't have anyone to take us to Chuckie Cheese...boys and girls can't go to Chuckie Cheese without somebody to watch them.
      Dana: (Laughing Hysterically)
Logan: And Mommy, if I tried to get in car and drive, I crash.
Dana: (Laughing Even More Hysterically) Logan, I love you, now go ahead and lay down and take your nap.

      family+friends=very cool weekend

We have friends and family coming in town this weekend. A little birthday celebration for my only daughter, Kinley. I was looking through some old pictures the other day and was reminded just how important family is. (Given, though, that most family is very strange and should be highly medicated...ha.) I reminisced about the days when we would ALWAYS go down the road to my cousin's house, or my grandmother's house....or some family member's pad...to celebrate someone's birthday. Actually, we didn't even need a birthday excuse to get together. We used to gather for fish fries. (These gatherings included home made icecream, hand crank style.) We used to gather.....JUST to gather. I miss those days sometimes.

What I love most about family and what I love most about friends from my hometown or childhood or my past - THEY KNOW ME. We always pick up wherever we left off. And they keep you grounded. As Dana and I have floated from KY to GA and have signed on for new adventures along the way - ministries and careers and everything under the moon - these vitally important people remind us of who we REALLY are and keep us grounded. They also pray for us like nobody's business. (That's an unusual phrase.)

So I'm looking forward to rocking NorthWest Georgia this weekend. Will be taking everyone to the SonFest in Woodstock, GA. (Hint: Free admission, free inflatables for kids to jump on, great music.)

Afterthought: Yes, I even love the Bama fans in my family...God bless their soul. :-)

      I Am Certain

I am certain that in life, in business, in ministry, in...everything, that people will disappoint you. I am certain that I will disappoint others, that I will fail. I am certain that I must keep pressing on.

I am certain that as long as life involves people, flawed people, that you will experience hurt and will be wronged. I am certain that I myself have hurt others and thank God for that little thing called grace.

I am certain that business owners, managers, church leaders, people in authority...will make mistakes, mistakes that affect you. I am certain that I will do dumb things, dumb things that will affect others. I pray they are minimal. I pray for wisdom.

I am certain that beyond any disappointment, hurt, or wrong doing is God's absolute best. I am certain that beyond that difficult time is something you couldn't have dreamed up yourself. It's bigger than you. I am certain that life sometimes takes trials to build character. I am certain that God is looking for men and women who above all else will hold fast to Him, and react in all circumstances with patience, understanding, forgiveness...character. I am certain I struggle with that. I am certain that we are to pray for those who do us wrong. I am certain that is whacked out. I wonder how many people have to pray for me?

I am certain that nobody is always trustworthy. I am certain that HE is.

I am certain that I'm uncertain about a lot of things, including how to end this post.

"It's Almost Like They're Little Adults"

I was listening to a radio station interview The Duggar Family this morning, on my way to work. It was not a Christian radio station and it was quite humorous to hear some of the interaction. One caller was frustrated...actually, quite upset...at this family because she felt they were denying their kids a "normal" childhood and somewhat enslaving them by requiring they pitch in and help. Mrs.Duggar patiently, and with tons of grace, responded to each question and remark. She explained that the older children actually wanted to help out. That they did their best to raise them with a mindset of serving others.

She elaborated on that point and captured everyone's attention. She pointed to the fact that in our society today we have SUCH a culture of selfishness. And kids are not taught nearly enough to serve others. She talked about the reward of living like this, and the joy their family finds in serving one another...and how she wouldn't expect anyone to truly understand. (For the record: I don't know where they stand theologically, but props for promoting family and servanthood!)

The caller interrupted Mrs.Duggar and said, "Yeah, but, but,...I don't know, it's still just weird, you relying on your older ones to take care of the younger ones...it's almost like they're little adults or something." When I heard her say that I thought WOW. So many parents are clueless, eh? (Including myself often times.) Have people forgotten that your children ARE little adults?!? How SOFT have we gotten? Are we teaching responsibility any more?

I realize it's a fine line...especially as a follower of Christ. The line is this: Not wanting to be legalistic. You don't want to harp so much on responsibility, discipline, DEMANDING allegiance/servanthood...we know the result of that. But dude, wow. Have we forgotten that children ARE little adults and we are cultivating their skills, etc? I mean, it wasn't too many decades ago that around the age of 12 they were expected to BIG TIME contribute to the economy of the family, etc.

Well, I think you get the point. In fear that I will start sounding too mature or like an old goob, I'll get back to my Honeycomb cereal in a cup and my Mountain Dew.

Summary: Yeah, they're kids...let em be kids...but cmon, never forget they CAN handle much more responsibility than we give them now-a-days. And great job Mrs.Duggar. Great reminder on serving others----especially FAMILY, which is very difficult at times.

      Sunday Quote

2 quotes that stood out to me in today's message:

"Beliefs are something we hold, convictions are something that hold us."
      ----
"You can teach what you know, but ultimately you'll reproduce what you are."

The message was What Every Child Needs to Know about God. (He's GREAT! He's Real! He's Personal!)

      What's It Like?

So tell me, what's it like? I really want to know. What's it like watching our arrogance? What's it like hearing us say some of things we say...and how do you keep silent? How do you not respond sometimes? Your quiet confidence speaks volumes. What's it like to see our "success" and hear us compare it to your "dead" ministry? What's it like to watch us parade our new, innovative, "far better" techniques, approaches, philosophies, ultra "cool" and yet somehow much much deeper spiritual stuff? What's it like?

No sir. No ma'am. We are not all this way. But yes sir, unfortunately too many are. And how did it reach this anyway? Why is it an us/you thing? We are all on the same team, right? I suppose for good intentions so many of us set out to plant new places of hope. To reach new people. But I apologize to you - some of the greatest generation ever - for our arrogance. Whether intentional or unintentional, we've discounted your years of service. With slicing critiques and unwise words we diminish your faithfulness to Christ and His Bride.

Kind of funny when you think about it. We get excited over X number of people coming to our new place. Yet, when I think about the years you've invested into the few...and how those few went on to change a few more....and those went on to influence more...ahh....wow...I see...THAT is discipleship. Yeah, we try to integrate "discipleship" too. But I'm just not sure it's as effective as what you've done.

So tell me, what's it like? And after you tell me what it's been like to watch me make a fool of myself (sometimes a good fool - for Christ), help me. Pass on what you have. My generation desperately needs it. We need the balance. We need your years of wisdom. We need your patience and insight. We need your discipline in prayer and faithfulness.

I can't contain the excitement when I think about coupling our enthusiasm and "do whatever it takes" attitude with your years of experience, wisdom, spiritually maturity, and leadership.

Rock on. (Oh, sorry, that's code for Praise the Lord!)

      Perspective

I recently spoke with an 82yr old gentleman who said he worked 40 years with a company and chose to never take a vacation. As in NEVER. As in four zero. As in keep working and don't stop. He saved up cash and bought a modest home for 120,000. He's now considering a vacation. He's thinking about a cruise.

So stop your whining and get back to work!

      A little warm

Our house bakes in the afternoon. Direct sun. No trees. No shade. Up on a small hill. Blazin hot.

      Ahhhh......summer in GA. Lovely.

      And I sat....

      ....and I sat....and I sat....and I sat.....in my car, in traffic.

      Welcome back to school kiddos.

(Can I rent a helicopter this first week and drop them off that way?)

      Quite Simple: Love

"It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres."
      1 Cor 13:7

I'm blessed. Actually, blessed is an understatement. I feel like the most fortunate dude alive. I've been involved with some incredible ministries - churches, outreach groups, campus stuff, etc. Today's message at Northstar reminded me about the common denominator in each of these places. Mike Linch wrapped up the Summer of Love series and talked about how love always protects, always looks for the best in others, always places others first, and never gives up on people. It was a powerful message...but what is more powerful is the people and actions behind the message.

When I think about these places of impact I think of the simple common feature: Love. Of the various things I've been involved with, the various states I've lived, the one common thing about the good ministries is the contagiousness of the people; the love they poured out on others.

It's important to note just how different all of these places are. Different philosophies. Different approaches to ministry. Different styles. Different convictions on various topics. But their heart for people, their contagious love - the common denominator - made such a huge impact on me.

West Huntsville Baptist Church - I've never been around a more loving, caring group of people - ever. I don't just say this b/c I grew up in this church. I say this b/c it's the solid truth. There's a "love you no matter what" attitude that permeates that place. Almost like an Auburn family feel----despite the pastor being a Bama fan. :-)

Charleston Outreach - I've never been around a more hard working, "labor of love" group in my life. I've never seen so many hearts break for those in their community...and be resolved to bring healing to the many hurts. Though Dana and I just spent a summer there, it's forever embedded in me.

NorthStar Church - It's been just a couple of weeks since we arrived at our new home and I'm blown away by the heart of this church. I knew of it's reputation...it's hard to avoid hearing about the impact their making in this area. It's so much more than style or the Sunday morning service. People matter. Period. How we love others matters. Period. Loving God, Loving Others. Period. Good stuff.

This week: Love like crazy. That's the challenge for me this week. Join me.

      Post Revisited

Last July I posted THIS about Vidal. Well, last night I ran in to him at Home Depot. I recognized his face...and obviously the golden gun necklace he was wearing. I stopped him and asked, "You work at Walmart, right?" (I was already 95% sure it was him.) We chatted for about 10 seconds. Dana thinks I'm crazy...and I just think Vidal is the coolest guy in Bartow County.

      A Serious Question

I've thought this through. I've considered the cost of asking a question like this. I've pondered the effects this might have on me and my family...or even my career. I've determined it's worth the risk. I've decided the answer to this question is a foundational one - that you as a human being may not function wholly without the right answer. It's that important. So here it is. Here's the grand salami. Here's the life altering, only one correct answer QUESTION: Is there a better soft drink than Mountain Dew?

      The answer is no.

If you care to differ, please leave a thorough response in the comment section...but be prepared for the debate of your life.

      Thursday's Tune

One of my favorite songs on the radio right now (mainly because of the beat) is "What I've Done" by Linkin Park. Here's the lyrics:

      In this farewell,
      There's no blood,
      There's no alibi.
      `Cause I've drawn regret,
      From the truth,
      Of a thousand lies.

So let mercy come, And wash away

      What I've Done.
      I'll face myself,
To cross out what I've become.
      Erase myself,
And let go of what I've done.

      Put to rest,
      What you thought of me.
      While I clean this slate,
      With the hands,
      Of uncertainty.

      So let mercy come,
      And wash away

      What I've Done.
      I'll face myself,
To cross out what I've become.
      Erase myself,
And let go of what I've done.

      For What I've Done

      I'll start again,
      And whatever pain may come.
      Today this ends,
      I'm forgiving what I've done.

      I'll face myself,
To cross out what I've become.
      Erase myself,
And let go of what I've done.
      What I've done.

      Forgiving What I've Done.
